There is no reason to do either of these, especially with the amount of sites online dedicated to sewing supplies.

Great Uses for Duvetyne Fabric

July 31st, 2011

Duvetyne is a fabric generally made from cotton or wool, with a matte finish and flaunting a nap on one side. Because it is very opaque and has the ability to block light very well, duvetyne is the standard fabric for use in the motion picture industry to control unwanted light. For its light-blocking qualities, it has come to be known as commando cloth. For example, an interesting use of the duvetyne fabric was creating the illusion of space in the early season of the Star Trek series, by gluing glitter on a black sheet made of this material. In theatrical performances, duvetyne is often used for making curtains, creating both a luxurious and heavy look, and blocking well the view of the stage. In a similar fashion, the fabric has a tradition in being used for making clothing for stage performances and not only. Dresses, suits and coats also used to be made from duvetyne.

Pillow Pals to Liven Up Your Rooms

July 19th, 2011

Pillows of all shapes and sizes never fail to bring comfort to anyone. Pillows with beautifully quilted pillowcases however, bring much more. They can liven up any room in the house and make anybody who enters that room instantly feel at ease.

When learning how to quilt, one of the easiest things to make is pillowcases. Quilters can instantly update any room in the house by creating custom pillows and without breaking the budget. For example, to liven up your bedroom, you need to have a focus fabric around which all the other fabrics will coordinate with and it’s all a matter of choosing strong fabrics that will complement your focus fabric. Arrange pillows in all shapes and sizes so that the room becomes a very relaxing place to be in at the end of the day. Saving scraps from your previous quilting projects can also be handy in making pillowcases to match your quilted blankets in a twist and turn pattern that not only draws in the eye to the design but also makes a very lively addition to a drab bedroom. Or if you’re not into mixing and matching, you can do the exact opposite, just coordinate your colors but don’t match them since most pillows look best when mixed but not matched. Make sure that the fabrics you choose are easy to clean and durable as well. And lastly as a finishing touch, you can jazz up your pillows by using embellishments like new or old vintage rickrack, buttons or buckles. Or you can stitch on appliqués or print heirloom photos.

However you want to do your pillowcases is not really something you need to do by the book. Allow your creativity to push through and your imagination to run wild. This is after all what makes quilt making fun.

Yee Haw, We Are Having a Western Party!

July 18th, 2011

Y’all know that a western party theme can be one heck of a good time. But what all do you need to do before the party starts swinging?

1. Pick a location- The location should be as country as you can get it. A barn would be a perfect setting for this party. You will be able to give hay rides if space allows.

2. Invite your favorite cowboys and cowgirls- You want these invites to be informative but, super cute too! Attaching a sheriff star badge to each invite would be a good idea. Make sure to tell everyone one to come in their favorite western attire.

3. Decorate- Straw is a great way to decorate for a western party. You can also use bandannas of all different colors to add some excitement. Cow skulls are a favorite. Sunflowers are beautiful and very western, great for center pieces.

Once you have done all these things, along with setting up games and music. Your partners are sure to have a rip roaring good time.

Portable Chicken Coops for Aspiring Chicken Farmers

May 6th, 2011

Portable chicken coops offer many advantages for new or aspiring chicken farmers. Don’t think you need a large farm to be a successful chicken farmer. There are many chicken coops designs that can fit easily into your backyard even if you live in the city.

Portable chicken coops also gives you the advantage of being able to move it around to wherever you are, so if you’re someone who likes to keep their chickens as pets, this makes for easy relocation. Also, having a mobile coop allows for easier maintenance since you can easily move the chicken coop to a easier location to clean it. Portable chicken coops are practical for the small scale poultry/chicken enthusiast.

Some Portable chicken coop designs also called chicken tractors even attach to wheels for easy relocation, maybe when your chickens are in need of some fresh grass. Chicken tractors are often built in an A shape and several designs don’t include a bottom.

All chicken coops must be well constructed if you want them to survive the wear of the elements, but portable ones have to be extra resilient to with-stand constant movement. If this is not taken care of then it is very likely that you will face problems, and repairs will be needed more often than you would really want.

Portable chicken coops are usually smaller in size to make for easy moving, if you aren’t looking to have a large number of hens in your backyard then you should definitely go with a portable coop. Besure not cram too many birds into a small of space, the results won’t be too good. Just make sure that each hen has at least 4-5 ft of space to move around. Otherwise you may endanger your hens’ health, resulting in a decrease in egg production you are so desperately wanting.

April 23rd, 2011

Technology has evolved and we can now find woodworking plans in different locations that we would have not expected in the past. We used to look at different TV shows and see how people would have built something and this was great but we had to not miss the shows for free tips and tricks. The good news is that nowadays this changed and there are many websites that feature content from Television shows. As an example, the website of HGTV will have many free woodworking plans videos uploaded and there are also plans to use in order to build outdoor structures. We also recommend Bob Vila and HouseCalls. The bottom line is that you are going to need patience but if you look around we are sure that you are to find dozens of great projects that you can start working on as soon as you would like to. Do not underestimate this possibility.

Searching for Shabby Chic on Craigslist

March 11th, 2011

Sorry no blogging yesterday, but I did tell all of you that I had to be out of town. Ok, so you remember Doris has sold our table for less then we initially paid for it so she can make room and have enough cash to purchase a Shabby Chic mission style hardwood dining table and six chairs she found on craigslist.

This great craigslist discovery flat booms out, she tells me she went to pick it up, which of course was in a very bad part of town; however, upon seeing it decided not to buy it because it was in pretty bad condition even by Shabby Chic standards. Now for Doris to pass of a craigslist buy I know it must have been in bad shape I’ve seen the woman haul home a three leg stool with two legs missing only to say to me “honey! It only needs a little work”.

I’m sure there is more to this story to unfold Doris has just shown me a new craigslist ad by someone named Billy Ray the ad reads “TOO CUTE COTTAGE DROP LEAF TABLE…SHABBY CHIC DISTRESSED PAINT”. I shall let the name Bill Ray pass but two things in this ad raised my curiosity “too cute” and “distressed paint” I will discuss then in tomorrow’s post so come back.

In this article, I will take up some of the best hairstyling tools today that offer the most functionality and advantages. So read on and note the brand names and models that I will focus on. The Chi Hair Straightener is a highly recommendable gadget to include in your beauty kit; aside from having a compact and beautiful design it is also loaded with many amazing modern features that keep it above the rest of its competitions. You are probably already familiar with the capabilities of a flat hair iron; it is the most effective way of straightening hair even in its most curly form as direct heat and pressure is applied to the hair. But with the CHI technology, you are not just dealing with an ordinary iron; but a ceramic iron at that. Hot plates that are made from ceramic materials have a high degree of advantage compared to hot plates and coils that are made from copper. Copper materials do not have the capacity to maintain a given temperature for one, and it even has sudden surges of heat that can cause hot spots and burned hair.
